CLOTHING
You don’t have to be a professional cyclist to reap the rewards of using cycling clothing. When you use cycling-specific clothing, you enjoy riding more than ever before.
A good pair of cycling “knicks” (shorts) will help relieve those sore points that you sometimes get from your saddle. They are designed to contour to your body as you pedal, without creases or seams,
and minimize pressure points on the skin.
The synthetic chamois (padded insert) is designed to give an extra layer of comfort to those places that will get tender when you cycle.
The best inserts are elastic in nature and vary in thickness in different areas of the padding.
They are available in two styles; regular knick and a bib ‘n’ brace, which is a short with suspenders. Some people find the bib more comfortable though it can be a little warmer to wear.
If lycra body-hugging shorts are not your style, then try some of the mountain bike shorts. These shorts have an inner short which is very similar to a regular pair of knicks; it is lycra and has a padded insert. Then you also get a quality elastic outer short to wear over the top.
So now you can easily stop for a coffee after your ride, or even go into a mall without worrying about how you look.
Gloves are the next piece of clothing to look at. You use gloves for many reasons; extra padding, absorbing sweat, keeping your hands warm during winter, or protection in a fall. Gloves with gel padding in the palm can make your ride more comfortable and help reduce any tingling you may be experiencing. If you just want a better grip on the handlebars when your hands are sweating (and we all sweat in Dubai) then thin gloves are the ones for you. Similarly, if you go cycling early on winter mornings, keep your hands warm with a pair of winter gloves.
And the last reason, even though we don’t like to mention it, is that gloves will protect your hands if you ever have a fall from your bike. We all naturally put our hands out to stop the fall and gloves can help in this situation.
When you realise the benefits of using cycling knicks, you will also quickly see that using a jersey, or shirt, where the material breathes to allow sweat to evaporate, is the best thing when riding your bike. If you feel more comfortable and drier, then the jersey is working for you! There are different styles to suit different people; tight-fitting racing style or looser, more casual-fitting. Support your local club or favourite bike with distinctive clothing, jerseys can be long-sleeved, short-sleeved or sleeveless – your choice.
Sunglasses, while not really being clothing, are an essential item for you to be wearing while riding. Whether you ride during the day, or in the cooler evening, a pair of cycling glasses can protect your eyes from the harsh sun and help keep out particles of sand.
Other clothing accessories you may want to consider include arm and leg warmers, a bandana, socks, and vests or jackets.
